Welcome to the homework page!

All homework tasks for this unit are posted below.

How to submit:

1) Create a  page on your blog labelled "Homework " (remember to link it to your main page)

2) Add each homework task under a new subheading on your page. Make sure you include the date that you completed it as well 

3) YOU WILL BE TOLD WHICH TASKS TO COMPLETE AT THE END OF EACH LESSON AND CHECKED IN YOUR FIRSTLESSON OF THE FOLLOWING WEEK

4) You may complete as many homework tasks in advance doing your own independent research if you wish!

EACH WEEK YOU WILL BE ASKED TO FIND DEFINITIONS FOR YOUR GLOSSARY. THE LINK BELOW HAS ALL OF THE GLOSSARY WORDS THAT YOU WILL NEED TO DEFINE. COPY THIS LIST ONTO YOUR OWN 'GOOGLE DOC' AND PUT A LINK ON YOUR HOMEWORK PAGE SO YOU CAN UPDATE EACH WEEK

Topic 1 – Sectors, Products, Platforms and Devices

1.     Describe the difference between media sectors, products, platforms and devices. Use examples.

2.     Complete essay question: "How has access to digital media technology changed the way in which the audience consumes media?" (min. 100 words)

Topic 2 – Analogue and Digital

1.     Explain the difference between analogue and digital. Give 2 examples for each

2.     Identify 5 digital and 5 analogue devices in your home

Topic 3 – Synergy and Technological Convergence

1.     Explain the difference between cross-media synergy and technological convergence

2.     Find an example of cross –media synergy and explain

3.     Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of technological convergence

Topic 4.1 – Creating Meaning Part 1 (Connotations and denotations, shots, angles and movement)

1.     Find an example of a film poster, magazine cover or advert. List the connotations, denotations, mise en scene and written codes. Write a few sentences explaining the meaning behind the example.

2.     Watch a film of your choice. Storyboard the opening scene (at least 6 shots)

3.     Identify 6 different camera angles and 6 types of camera movement used in the film

4.     Choose one shot from the film (include a screenshot) and explain how the camera angles used create meaning.

Topic 4.2 – Creating Meaning Part 2 (Sound, lighting and mise en scene)


1.     Study the film poster below. Write a paragraph answering the question "How have stylistic codes been used to create meaning?" In your answer make sure you talk about Mise en scene, framing and angles, lighting, colour and denotations/connotations. Minimum 150 words.


2.     Watch a music video of your choice. Explain how the lighting was used to create meaning for the audience.

3.     Explain how sound might be used in a horror film to create meaning for the audience. (Min 100 words)

4. Finish off any notes that you couldn't finish in lesson

5. Finish off the Topic 1-4 Revision quiz and go through your notes to mark your answers. 

Topic 5 – Narrative

1.     What is the narrative of a film?

2.     Explain how a music video could have a narrative

3.     Apply Todorov’s theory to a film of your choice
4. Finish off any tasks not completed in lesson

Topic 6 – Representation

1.     Explain how media representations of ethnicity could be said to be stereotypical. Give examples. (Min 100 words)

2.     Watch an episode of a TV show of your choice. Identify any stereotypes used in the programme (e.g. ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion, ability, age etc.)

3.     Can you think of an example of a stereotypical image in the media that has caused harm? What about an example where no harm has been caused? What’s the difference between these two examples?

4.     Do you think it is necessary for an artist/filmmaker to have lived experience of the group of people he/she is representing? How could lived experience impact representation?

Topic 7 – Media Processes

1.     What are the five stages of production?

2.     What stage of production is adding sound to a documentary?

3.     What stage of production is viewing a film in the cinema?

4.     What stage of production is storyboarding a music video?

5.     What stage of production is shooting footage for a film?

Topic 8 – Media Consumption and Audiences

1.     Write a paragraph summarising what you have learnt about The Hypodermic Needle Theory and Uses/Gratification Theory- in your own words.  Include examples. (min. 100 words)

2.     What is the difference between a Primary and Secondary audience? Give an example of each.

3.     Explain the difference between individual and group consumption.

Topic 9 – Interactivity, Personalisation and User Generated Content

1.     What is user generated content?

2.     Create a 2-3 minute short film on your phone/tablet -Topic "About Me". Use at least 3 different camera angles. Upload to your YouTube channel and publish a link on your blog.

3.     Identify 3 types of personalisation on your phone

4.     How might a website include interactivity for it’s users?

Topic 10 – Regulatory Bodies

1.     What are the five regulatory bodies and what do they do?

2.     Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having regulatory bodies in the media industry?

Topic 11 – Audience Research and Profiling

1.     You have decided to create a new app to help students at the college. Write a brief summary of your idea.

2.     Conduct some secondary research into your app idea. You should aim to use at least 3 different sources (e.g. internet, books, newspaper) Once you have researched your topic, write a paragraph collating your information (min. 100 words)

3.     Create a profile of your target audience for your app.

4.     Explain the difference between an audience profile and audience demographics

Topic 12 – Reception Theory

1.       Explain reception theory in your own words using examples. (min. 100 words)


EXAM REVISION HOMEWORK

1. Create a set of flashcards for all terminology in the glossary
2. Complete at least 3 past papers on the Edexcel website
3. Choose a film poster or advert and discuss how the stylistic codes create meaning for the audience
4. Revise all of your notes from lesson
